Welcome to this week’s edition

The biggest lie about fun after 55 is that you should be "settling down" and choosing safer, quieter activities.

Your Adventure Awaits

Why fun gets better when you stop playing it safe

Here's what nobody tells you about recreation after 55: This is when fun finally gets good. Not "good for your age" or "appropriate for seniors"—genuinely, purely good. Better than it's ever been in your entire life.

I've coached thousands of people through every decade of life, and I can tell you with certainty that the most adventurous, engaged, and genuinely happy people I know are over 55. They're not playing it safe or settling for quiet hobbies. They're pursuing activities that energize them, challenge them, and remind them why being alive is such a gift.

But here's what makes their approach different: They're not trying to recapture their youth or prove anything to anyone. They're using the wisdom, resources, and freedom that come with their golden years to finally pursue the kind of recreation that actually serves their life.

Think about it. For the first time in decades, you have the luxury of choosing activities based purely on what brings you joy, not what fits your schedule or budget or what other people expect from you. You can pursue interests you've always been curious about but never had time for. You can travel to places you've dreamed of visiting. You can learn skills you've always wanted to master.

Most importantly, you have something your younger self never possessed: the confidence to try new things without worrying about looking foolish or being perfect at them immediately. You know that learning something new is its own reward, whether you become an expert or simply enjoy the process.

This is revolutionary thinking for most people over 55. They've been told that this is the time to slow down, be careful, and choose "age-appropriate" activities. They accept that their most adventurous days are behind them and that the best they can hope for is a comfortable routine.

But a comfortable routine isn't living—it's just existing. And you weren't put on this earth to merely exist during what could be the most fulfilling decades of your life.

The secret is understanding that recreation in your golden years isn't about proving you're still young. It's about finally being free to pursue what genuinely interests you without all the constraints that limited your choices for decades.

Maybe that means taking art classes you never had time for during your career. Maybe it's joining hiking groups and discovering trails you never knew existed. It could be learning to dance, taking cooking classes, joining book clubs, or pursuing hobbies that have nothing to do with anything you've ever done before.

The point isn't the specific activity—it's the mindset. You're not settling for entertainment that passes time. You're actively choosing recreation that enriches your life, challenges your mind, connects you with interesting people, and reminds you that growth and adventure don't have expiration dates.

Your golden years aren't the time to play it safe with your free time. It's time to finally play it smart. Smart enough to choose activities that truly fulfill you. Smart enough to pursue interests that energize rather than drain you. Smart enough to understand that fun isn't frivolous—it's essential for a life well-lived.

The commitment-based success philosophy applies here perfectly: Decide what kind of recreational life you want, create a plan to pursue it, and commit to taking action every week to build the kind of fun-filled golden years that make you excited to wake up each morning.

Your most adventurous days aren't behind you. They're waiting for you to claim them.

Here by your side, to help and guide.
